This magnificent Automaton entitled "L'autopatte" was made in 1910 in Paris, France by the renown toy maker, Fernand Martin & Cie.
Complete with the beautifully illustrated original box and a fully functional clockwork/wind-up mechanism with built in key, this hand painted tinplate character toy is in near perfect and totally authentic condition.
The black boy pushes backwards his heavy cart of freshly picked oranges by using his versatile and apparently strong little legs in a zig-zag direction - Quite an ingenious function, and typical of this superb toy maker's products.
Also illustrated is a scan of an original American toy advertisement from 1910 in which this very toy is illustrated and described. This toy reflects society's discriminatory attitude from a long bygone era.
