Buddy "L" toys were originally manufactured by the Moline Pressed Steel Company, which was started by Fred A. Lundahl in 1910. (Fred's nickname was Buddy). The company specialized in the production of toy cars, dump trucks, delivery vans, fire engines, construction equipment, and trains, all made from pressed steel which was far more durable than conventional tinplate toys. During the wartime years when raw materials were in demand elsewhere for the war effort, Buddy L utilized wood in order to maintain production.
