Don't go stealing watermelons.....
As this little boy has found out the hard way.
This comical lithographed tinplate Automaton features a boy (catalogued as "Poor Pete") eating a watermelon which it's presumed he's just stolen being bitten on his rear by a chasing dog.
It was made in 1910 by the Brandenburg based toy firm of Gunthermann and features a strong clockwork/wind-up mechanism that mimics the boy running away from the dog to no avail.
This toy reflects society's racial attitude at the time.
